Have you ever imagined standing where the seeds of Anglicanism in Kenya were first sown? Here at St.James ACK in Mombasa, we stand on hallowed ground. This is where the story of the Anglican Church of Kenya began.

In 1844, Johann Ludwig Krapf, a missionary from the Church Missionary Society, arrived in Mombasa. This marked the beginning of the Anglican presence in the region. Two years later, he was joined by Rev. Johann Rebman. Together, they established several CMS stations along the coast. These early efforts eventually led to the formation of the Diocese of Eastern Equatorial Africa in 1884. It included Uganda, Kenya, and Tanganyika. James Hannington became its first bishop.

The mission spread inland from Mombasa. By 1900, it had reached central and western Kenya. This expansion greatly benefitted from the East Africa Revivals. Mass conversions occurred during this period in the first half of the 20th century.

In 1927, Kenya became its own diocese. A significant milestone was reached in 1955. Festo Olang’ and Obadiah Kariuki were consecrated as the first Kenyan bishops. The Archbishop of Canterbury performed the ceremony in Uganda. In 1960, the Province of East Africa was formed. It comprised Kenya and Tanzania. Leonard James Beecher served as its first archbishop.

St.James ACK has witnessed many pivotal moments. In 1970, Kenya and Tanzania became separate provinces. Festo Olang’ became the first African archbishop of the new province of Kenya. The Anglican Church of Kenya changed its name in 1998.

The Anglican Church of Kenya is committed to spreading its mission. It aims to bring all people into a living relationship with God. This happens through preaching, teaching, healing, and social transformation. The church wants to enable everyone to grow in faith and live life to the fullest.

St.James ACK is more than just a building. It represents the start of a journey. This journey has shaped the spiritual landscape of Kenya. It is a story of faith, perseverance, and transformation. It’s a place where the echoes of the past resonate with the hopes of the future. The Church runs many educational and other institutions. These include theological colleges and a provincial programme of theological education by extension.
