“What if a building could embody innovation?” That’s the essence of the Salesforce Tower. It rises tall in Midtown Manhattan. Let’s explore the story behind this impressive skyscraper.
Originally, this 630-foot tower was built between 1971 and 1973. It served as the headquarters for the New York Telephone Company. Later, it housed NYNEX and Bell Atlantic. Kahn & Jacobs designed the 41-story building. It once had a facade resembling telephone relays.
Fast forward to the 21st century. From 2006 to 2007, the tower underwent a massive upgrade. The owners invested $260 million to transform it into Class A office space. The phone company moved its main offices downtown in the early 2000s. They sold most of the building on Sixth Avenue. Verizon kept a condo interest on floors 6-12. They maintained offices and a phone exchange there.
In 2013, Verizon moved its corporate headquarters back to 1095 Avenue of the Americas. This happened after they sold the upper floors of their other building.
A major turning point occurred in 2015. Ivanhoé Cambridge and Callahan Capital Properties purchased the building. The price was $2.2 billion. It was the priciest single-office-building transaction in New York City since 2008. In 2016, Real Summit Investment acquired a 49% stake for $1.15 billion.
But how did it become the Salesforce Tower? In 2016, Salesforce signed a deal to rename the building. The San Francisco-based company planned to occupy five floors. The first Salesforce employees arrived in November 2016. The building became an East Coast hub for the company. It mirrored their headquarters in San Francisco.
The Salesforce Tower boasts an impressive list of tenants. Besides Salesforce and Verizon, there’s MetLife. Law firm Dechert LLP and iStar Financial also occupy space. Lloyds Banking Group and Standard Chartered USA are present. Stifel and U.S. Bancorp have offices there too.
You can also find retail and dining options at the base. Whole Foods Market opened a flagship location in January 2017. Pandora Jewelry and Equinox Fitness operate there as well.
The building’s facade has transformed over the years. The original striped marble design gave way to a green glass curtain wall. This recladding happened during a renovation. The renovation also created a plaza to the west of the building.
Notice the two-story base. It features clear glass, white spandrels, and silver metal framing. A subway entrance exists on the north facade. Storefronts line the other ground-floor bays. Freight entrances are on the south facade’s west end. The west side has black metal vents extending beyond the roofline.
The Salesforce Tower stands as a testament to adaptation and innovation. From its beginnings as the New York Telephone Company headquarters to its current status as a modern office skyscraper, it continues to evolve. Its story reflects the dynamic nature of New York City itself. Take a moment to appreciate the Salesforce Tower. It is not just a building. It is a symbol of progress.
