Forty-five years ago the Camus Haut d’Annay stood proud. A testament to post-war ingenuity it housed miners’ families. This wasn’t just any housing project. The Camus Haut d’Annay was innovative. It was a prefabricated marvel. Designed by engineer Raymond Camus its construction revolutionized housing. Think of it as the Ford Model T of homes. Large panels prefabricated in a factory near Douai were assembled on-site. Each panel weighed less than five tons. They integrated wiring and window frames a streamlined process.

The Camus Haut d’Annay in Annay-sous-Lens was a key part of the Northern-Pas-de-Calais mining basin. It’s element 52 in the UNESCO World Heritage site. The project was ambitious. Four hundred and fifty homes were planned near the Mon Idée crossroads. Construction began in 1956. Four homes were completed each day. The initial plan called for a mix of four and six-unit buildings. Land acquisition issues reduced this. The final number was 454 homes.

Initially named Cité Mon Idée the housing complex became Cité du Maréchal Leclerc in 1959. The Camus Haut d’Annay was designed for families with two children. Children under six or older children of the same sex were accommodated. Each home was three levels. The ground floor held a utility area and bathroom. Upstairs was a kitchen living room and toilet. The top floor contained two bedrooms.

Sadly much of the Camus Haut d’Annay has been demolished. A campaign in 2004 saw much of the complex razed. Today only one six-unit building remains. It stands as a poignant reminder of a time when innovative construction solved urgent social needs. The Camus Haut d’Annay is a rare survivor. Its story is one of vision resourcefulness and the legacy of a bygone era. It whispers tales of industrial innovation and the lives it once sheltered. The Camus Haut d’Annay stands as a testament to the past a symbol of hope and ingenuity in the face of immense challenges.
