What if I told you that Cochem-Zell is more than just a name on a map? It is a district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Cochem-Zell sits in the north-west of this state. It is a place of vineyards and history. The district’s story began in 1816. At that time, the districts of Cochem and Zell were created. The area had come under Prussian rule.

In 1969, Zell district was dissolved. Its northern and middle parts joined Cochem district. The district was then renamed Cochem-Zell. Not too long ago in 2014, Lahr, Mörsdorf, and Zilshausen municipalities were assigned elsewhere. They became part of the Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis.

Cochem-Zell is made up of varied landscapes. There is the Moselle valley. Vineyards dominate this area. Mountains rise in the east and north. These are the Hunsrück and the Eifel. The highest point is the Höchstberg. It stands 616 m above sea level in the Eifel.

The coat of arms tells its own story. It features symbols from different territories. A red cross represents the Bishops of Trier. They had a castle at Zell. A horn symbolizes the territory of Beilstein. A lion stands for the Electorate of the Palatinate. The Counts Palatine had a castle in Cochem.
