Picture this. A bustling railroad station. The year is 1838. A new station stands proudly. Its name Maplewood. This small station would become the heart of a thriving community.
Maplewood New Jersey is more than just a train stop. It’s a story woven through time. It began as a collection of small villages. Jefferson Village Hilton and North Farms. These villages had unique histories. They were farming communities. Orchards thrived here. Apples were plentiful. The Harrison and Canfield varieties were particularly popular.
Before European settlers arrived Lenape Native Americans used trails here. These trails became the roads we walk on today. The early settlers were mostly English Dutch and French Puritans. They arrived around 1675. They came from Newark and Elizabeth. They had previously settled in other areas like Hempstead Long Island. They purchased most of Essex County from the Native Americans.
Three main trails shaped Maplewood’s growth. South Orange Avenue Springfield Avenue and Ridgewood Road. The first house of worship was a Baptist chapel. It was built in 1812. It later became a Methodist Episcopal church. The community also established several mills. Seth Boyden a renowned inventor arrived in 1855. He developed new agricultural products. He also built steam engines for the railroad.
The Morris and Essex Railroad arrived in 1838. It changed Maplewood forever. It transformed from a farming area to a commuter suburb. Land speculator John Shedden built the station. He named it Maplewood. Edward Balch a visionary homebuilder is called the Father of Maplewood. He built 176 homes around 1900. The 1920s saw significant population growth. Maplewood became the suburb we know today.
Maplewood boasts beautiful architecture. Guilbert & Betelle designed many buildings. The Olmsted Brothers designed Memorial Park. This park is a central gathering place. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Maplewood Theater hosted Cheryl Crawford’s revival of Porgy and Bess.
The town is more than just beautiful architecture. Ultimate Frisbee was invented here in 1968. The wooden golf tee was invented here in 1921. Maplewood is a vibrant diverse and family-friendly community. It has a thriving downtown area. It’s also home to a vibrant LGBTQ+ community. It features its annual Maplewoodstock concert.
