Did you know that right here on this very spot the Hare Krishna movement in the United States began? This unassuming building at 26 Second Avenue was the first Hare Krishna temple outside of India. It’s more than just a building. It’s a cradle of a global faith.

In 1966 A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness ISKCON right here. He arrived in New York City with little more than forty rupees and a fervent belief in spreading Krishna consciousness. He didn’t preach to the elite. Instead he connected with the counterculture of the 1960s. He chanted in public parks. He attracted hippies and young people seeking something more.

His first outdoor chanting ceremony was under an American elm tree in nearby Tompkins Square Park. This event is considered the birth of the Hare Krishna religion in America. Poet Allen Ginsberg was present. He witnessed firsthand the power of the Hare Krishna mantra replacing other forms of escape like LSD for many followers.

The chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra is central to ISKCON. Followers chant Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. This 16-word mantra is repeated 108 times on prayer beads. Devotees often chant sixteen rounds daily. It is considered the only path to salvation in the current age.

ISKCON devotees also practice japa a meditative mantra repetition and arati a ceremony offering water incense and flowers to a statue of Krishna. They are lacto-vegetarians abstaining from meat fish eggs onions garlic and other intoxicants. They avoid gambling and illicit sexual activity.

This temple on Second Avenue wasn’t just the starting point. It became a hub for distributing spiritual books translated by Prabhupada into many languages. These books such as the Bhagavad Gita As It Is became essential scriptures for ISKCON.

ISKCON’s growth was phenomenal. From a small group in New York City it expanded across the globe reaching millions. The Beatles’ George Harrison became a prominent supporter recording music with the Hare Krishnas and even helping to fund a temple in the UK. However this growth also brought challenges and controversies including accusations of child abuse and internal schisms. Yet the Hare Krishna Temple in New York stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and devotion. A place where a global movement began. A legacy that continues.
