Gazing up at Coraidelstein, one can almost hear the echoes of its long history. Coraidelstein, perched above the Moselle River, whispers tales of knights, artists, and the passage of time. Local legends claim a founding in 960 by Count Palatine Hermann I. However, the documented history of Coraidelstein begins in 1294. In that year, it fell under the ownership of the Archbishop of Trier. This transfer was confirmed in 1346. The Lords of Winneburg then held Coraidelstein as a fief from 1410 to 1542. After this period, Coraidelstein’s ownership fragmented. Heinrich von Hagen received a portion in 1545. Shares were also held by the heirs of Winneburg: the Hausts of Ulmen, the Höins of Hartenfels, and Hugo and Gerlach Zandt von Merl. Coraidelstein found a more stable ownership in 1654 with Johann Eberhard von Kesselstatt. He held it as a fief, and it remained with the Reichsfreiherren von Kesselstatt family until 1917. Life continued within Coraidelstein’s walls until 1830. At some point after, Coraidelstein fell into disrepair. In 1917, Hans Harney, a former consul and director of the Deutsche Bank in Düsseldorf, purchased Coraidelstein. He breathed new life into the castle. He constructed two residential buildings on the grounds. His daughter, Else Harney, established a pottery workshop with her partner Wendelin Stahl in 1952. After Else’s death in 1984, Wendelin continued the pottery workshop with his former student Ayca Riedinger until his own death in 2000. Today, Coraidelstein remains privately owned and inaccessible to the public. But as you stand here, imagine the echoes of its vibrant past. A past woven with threads of feudal lords, bustling workshops, and the quiet dignity of age.
