Imagine a secret so well-guarded that even the neighbors were in the dark. That secret is the Bundesbank-Bunker Cochem. From 1964 to 1988, this top-secret facility held up to 15 billion marks. This was no ordinary stash. It was an emergency currency designed to protect West Germany from economic disaster.

The Cold War was a tense time. The Federal Republic of Germany was vulnerable. It was a border state between the West and the Eastern Bloc. The Bundesbank-Bunker Cochem was built as a security measure. It was meant to preserve currency reserves.

There was a real fear of counterfeit banknotes flooding West Germany. This could cause hyperinflation. The Bundesbank created a special series of the German Mark called BBk II. This emergency currency was stored in the bunker. Every three months, a Bundesbank auditor randomly checked the money stock. Only these auditors were allowed inside.

The location of the Bundesbank-Bunker Cochem was carefully chosen. Cochem offered good protection. The Moselle valley was safe from things like nuclear blasts. The bunker was built 30 meters below the surface in the Cond district. Frankfurt am Main was closer to the inner German border.

The above-ground part of the facility was disguised. It looked like a training and recreational home. This was for the Deutsche Bundesbank. The bunker had a main and an emergency access. The main entrance was at Am Wald 35. The emergency exit was in the cooling tower.

The bunker had a sophisticated security system. Sensors in the walls reacted to shocks and noise. If an alarm went off, the local police were notified. They did not know what was inside. Only the director could listen to noises in the vault. Accessing the vault required keys from Frankfurt.

In the event of nuclear war, the Bundesbank-Bunker Cochem could protect 100 civilians for two weeks. It had sleeping and working rooms. There was a warning post and a radio room. The bunker had its own electricity supply. Diesel generators and 18000 liters of fuel were stored. A deep well secured the drinking water supply. A 40000 liter tank provided water. Sand filters ensured breathable air.

In 1988, the emergency currency was destroyed. The bunker was left empty. In 1994, the Deutsche Bundesbank sold it to Volksbank Cochem. Customer lockers were installed in a vault. Most of the complex remained untouched.

In 2014, an entrepreneur bought the entire facility for under 500000 euros. He repaired the bunker and turned it into a museum. Since March 2016, the Bundesbank-Bunker Cochem has been open for guided tours. The former camouflage homes are now a hotel.

Today, you can explore this unique relic of the Cold War. Walk through the 100-meter long access tunnel. See the vault with its 4-meter thick walls and 8-ton door. Imagine the 15 billion Deutschmarks stored here in boxes and bags. The Bundesbank-Bunker Cochem documents a crucial piece of German monetary history. It stands as a reminder of the Cold War era. It serves as a memorial for peace.

So, as you leave the Bundesbank-Bunker Cochem reflect on the secrets it held. Think about the lengths taken to protect a nation’s economy. Remember that beneath the surface lies a story of fear, preparation, and ultimately, preservation.
