Did the scent of coal and steam ever hang heavier than here at Bahnbetriebswerk Berlin-Schöneweide? This place, Bahnbetriebswerk Berlin-Schöneweide, whispers stories of a century of railway history. From its birth in 1906, alongside the bustling Berlin-Cottbus line, it has been a vital hub. Imagine the Prussian G7 and G10 locomotives, the workhorses of the early days, chugging into the twelve-stall roundhouse. Bahnbetriebswerk Berlin-Schöneweide wasn’t just a depot. It was a symbol of a rapidly industrializing Germany, where rail was king. The railway traffic exploded. The original roundhouse at Bahnbetriebswerk Berlin-Schöneweide expanded to accommodate twenty locomotives. A 23-meter turntable, a marvel of engineering, spun these iron giants, directing them to their stalls. The iconic water tower, still standing proud, quenched the thirst of these steam-powered beasts. Through the world wars, Bahnbetriebswerk Berlin-Schöneweide endured. Bombardment during World War II caused some damage, but the railway’s vital role ensured a swift recovery. The post-war years brought new challenges and new machines. The mighty BR 50s arrived, followed by a diverse array of locomotives during the war, including the rare DR E 178 01. After the war, the Soviet occupation demanded locomotives and rolling stock for reparations. Bahnbetriebswerk Berlin-Schöneweide contributed its share, many locomotives never returning. The Cold War era saw the arrival of diesel, then electric locomotives, marking the end of the steam era. The last scheduled steam train departed in 1982, hauled by the stalwart locomotive 52 1360. But steam wasn’t quite finished at Bahnbetriebswerk Berlin-Schöneweide. The iconic 52.80s continued to serve as heating locomotives and even stood in for diesels on occasion. In 1994, the last three 52.80s were retired, a poignant end to an era. Even then, Bahnbetriebswerk Berlin-Schöneweide wasn’t destined for silence. The Dampflokfreunde Berlin, a dedicated group of steam enthusiasts, breathed new life into the site. Today, they maintain the historic roundhouse and several locomotives, including the magnificent 52 8177-9, which stars in the In Extremo music video “Troja”. They even host festivals, sharing their passion with thousands of visitors. Bahnbetriebswerk Berlin-Schöneweide is more than just bricks and steel. It’s a living testament to the power of community and the enduring romance of the railway.
