“Vallis Longus.” Ever wondered about the roots of Valongo’s name? It whispers tales of Roman presence. We’re standing in Valongo a Portuguese municipality. It is a place etched with history and shaped by time.

Valongo’s story stretches back long before Portugal was even a nation. The Romans were here first. They came seeking gold in the Serra de Santa Justa. Imagine them toiling away. Their mark remains in Valongo’s very name derived from Latin. Vallis Longus means long valley. It is a testament to the landscape that cradled their ambitions.

Later came Germanic tribes. Then the Visigoths arrived. The Moors followed bringing their culture and influence. Traces of their presence linger in place names like Luriz, Moirama, and Alfena. Valongo became a crossroads of civilizations each leaving their mark.

Father Lopes dos Reis recounts a story. It tells of the Moors arriving in 716. He speaks of a peaceful, quiet occupation. The locals paid tribute and were left undisturbed to live as they did. They settled away from the Goda settlement. This paints a picture of coexistence and a blending of cultures.

After the reconquest of Porto, the region fell under the control of the Kingdom of Asturias. Valongo continued its quiet evolution.

The Middle Ages saw the land divided. It was split between the jurisdictions of Aguiar de Sousa and Maia. Land ownership was power. The King and the Clergy held most of it. Yet new settlements arose. Existing ones expanded. Chapels multiplied. This suggests a growing population and a burgeoning economy.

Bakery became a crucial industry. Valongo bakers fed the surrounding region with wheat bread. Their contribution was so significant. It even helped fund the construction of the Igreja Matriz de Valongo.

The 19th century brought hardship. Napoleon’s troops invaded. They turned the church into a stable and looted valuables. Valongo became a stage for battles between brothers vying for power. The Convent of N. Mr. do Bom Despacho transformed into a military hospital.

In 1836, D. Maria II created the Municipality of Valongo. It was formed from parishes belonging to other municipalities. Later the Royal Family visited Valongo in thanks for its creation. Arches were erected in celebration displaying admirable splendor.

Large farming houses rose. Roads developed. Trams and trains arrived. Valongo grew. People migrated from the interior of Portugal seeking new opportunities.

Mining became prominent. Slate antimony tungsten and coal were extracted from the earth. Factories sprung up transforming Ermesinde into an industrial hub. While some areas embraced industry others retained their rural character. Smallholdings sustained themselves with traditional farming.

Today Valongo balances its rich past with a modern vision. It embraces sustainable urban mobility and seeks to improve waste management. Valongo is committed to promoting circularity. The municipality encourages citizens to participate in decreasing waste production and promoting recycling.

So as we stand here remember Valongo’s long valley is more than just a name. It is a tapestry woven from Roman gold Moorish influence and the toil of generations. It is a story of resilience adaptation and the enduring spirit of a people. Valongo is a place where the past informs the present.
