Have you ever wondered how linen was made before machines took over? Right here at the Brechelbad-Museum in Chieming, time seems to have stood still. This isn’t just a museum; it’s a portal to the past. The Brechelbad-Museum, built around 1885 in Webersberg, reveals the painstaking process of turning flax into linen. For over four generations and up until World War II, three families—the Paulsepplbauers, Miglbauers, and Woferlbauers—used this very building. The process began with drying the flax. Then came the crucial step of “brecheling,” breaking the flax to extract those precious linen fibers. Because of the fire risk involved in drying the flax, the Brechelbad was wisely built away from the main house. Interestingly, the Brechelbad wasn’t just for work. It also served as a sort of rustic sauna, a “Schwitzbad” as it was called. These sweat baths have a history in the Alps dating back to the 16th century. The Brechelbad-Museum, operated by Rosa and Albert Multerer, offers a glimpse into this fascinating chapter of local history.
