Did the name Isaac Leeser ever cross your path? Here at Congregation Mikveh Israel Beth El Emeth Cemetery, Leeser’s legacy intertwines with the history of this sacred ground. Congregation Mikveh Israel Beth El Emeth Cemetery, nestled in West Philadelphia, has witnessed the passage of time since 1850. It was originally dedicated in 1857 by Isaac Leeser’s Congregation Beth-El-Emeth. Initially known as Beth-El-Emeth Cemetery, it later became part of Congregation Mikveh Israel’s heritage. This cemetery marks a fascinating chapter in Philadelphia’s Jewish history. Isaac Leeser, a prominent figure in Philadelphia’s Jewish community, left Congregation Mikveh Israel. He subsequently joined forces with Joseph Newhouse and Congregation Beth-El-Emeth in 1857. Interestingly, the congregation adhered to the “Spanish & Portuguese” rite. This is despite a majority of its members having German origins. Their meeting place was a former church north of Green Street in Northern Liberties. The story takes another turn in 1897 when Congregation Beth-El-Emeth dissolved. Many of its members returned to Congregation Mikveh Israel. This reunion included the transfer of ownership of Beth El Emeth Cemetery to Congregation Mikveh Israel in 1895. Congregation Mikveh Israel Beth El Emeth Cemetery stands as Mikveh Israel’s third cemetery. This place holds the memory of not just Leeser, but also other notable figures like Rabbi George Jacobs and Rabbi Eliezer Kleinberg, a co-founder of the Orthodox Union. Even amidst the serenity, shadows have fallen upon Congregation Mikveh Israel Beth El Emeth Cemetery. In May 1954, an act of vandalism disturbed the peace. Vandals overturned 33 headstones. They left behind remnants of their revelry – beer and wine bottles. The echoes of this disrespect eventually led to a historic marker near the cemetery. Erected in 1998 by the City of Philadelphia, the marker commemorates Reverend Leeser and his enduring contributions as a teacher and scholar.
