Lost in thought perhaps? That’s the silent question posed by the Stehender Mann Sculpture.

Let’s take a closer look at this sculpture. It is part of the Mensch und Natur project. The Stehender Mann sculpture is crafted from bronze. It stands as a testament to artistic expression.

The Stehender Mann sculpture was created by Doris Waschk-Balz. Its creation dates back to 1985. This artwork invites contemplation. It encourages viewers to connect with its form and meaning.

The Stehender Mann’s very existence sparks conversation. What does it represent? What emotions does it evoke? These are questions each viewer must answer for themselves.

Stephan Balkenhol also created standing man sculptures. Balkenhol was born in 1957 in Fritzlar, Hessen. He studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg. Ulrich Rückriem was one of his teachers. From 1976 to 1982, Balkenhol honed his craft.

Balkenhol received a teaching position at the Hamburger Kunsthochschule from 1988-1989. He taught at the Frankfurter Städelschule until 1991. Since 1992, he has been active at the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Karlsruhe.

Balkenhol’s sculptures often feature a stand or console. This connects the figure to the wall. It emphasizes the transition from surface to space. The figure integrates with its architectural surroundings.

Balkenhol often uses wood as a material. He feels it as a living substance. Grooves, cracks, and splinters remain visible. They reference the sculptural work process. The face lacks subjective emotion. It stands alone in its presence.

Balkenhol’s “Man on Buoy” sculptures stand in Hamburg. Since 1993, they have stood at various locations on the Elbe. Originally made of oak, the sculptures were replaced with aluminum in 2020. The sculptures depict middle-aged men in black trousers and white shirts. They have neutral facial expressions.

Balkenhol avoids clear depictions of emotion. He prefers viewers to find their own stories.

Whether crafted by Balkenhol or Waschk-Balz, the Stehender Mann invites us to pause. It encourages us to reflect and connect with the human form in its most basic state. The Stehender Mann stands as a symbol. It reflects humanity and artistic expression.
