A beam of light pierces the night. It’s the Colombo Lighthouse. Standing tall and proud. Guiding ships through the treacherous waters.

For generations the Colombo Lighthouse has stood sentinel. A beacon of hope in the vast Indian Ocean. It wasn’t always this way. The original lighthouse was much smaller. It became obscured by buildings. So a new structure was needed. A grander one.

In 1952 the current Colombo Lighthouse was constructed. A magnificent 29-meter-high structure. This was after the old lighthouse was deactivated. It sits atop a 12-meter-high concrete base. Four majestic lion statues guard its base. Prime Minister D S Senanayake inaugurated the lighthouse. It became a symbol of Colombo’s enduring spirit.

More than just a navigational aid. The Colombo Lighthouse is a symbol of Sri Lanka’s history. Its panoramic view once drew crowds. However things changed. The Sri Lankan Civil War caused access restrictions. Its proximity to the Naval Headquarters made it a high-security zone. Sadly the public was no longer able to enjoy its breathtaking view.

At its base. A naval gun battery stands ready. A tradition of gun salutes continues. A 25-gun salute echoes on February 4th. National Day. This tradition began with a 15-gun salute in 1948. It has evolved and adapted. In the past 52mm guns gifted by the Indian Navy were used. Recently the salute is conducted from naval ships. This change was due to the construction of Colombo Port City. The lighthouse is now landlocked.

The Colombo Lighthouse has witnessed many changes. It has seen the city expand. It has seen wars and peace. It has seen growth and development. Yet. It continues to shine brightly. A testament to Colombo’s enduring strength and resilience. A symbol of the city’s unwavering determination. It continues to protect the city. It continues to guide the ships. The Colombo Lighthouse. A beacon of hope.
