Let’s journey back to a time when Madrid’s population was rapidly expanding. The early 1960s saw a surge in residents. The existing churches struggled to serve everyone. Archbishop Casimiro Morcillo responded by creating 216 new parishes at once.
Among these new parishes were Cristo Sacerdote, Santa Victoria and Virgen del Trabajo. Initially Cristo Sacerdote was to be named Santísimo Cristo del Amparo. Santa Victoria was to be named Cristo Sacerdote. These parishes faced challenges. They lacked buildings and resources. Services were held outdoors or in borrowed spaces.
In those early days the community of Cristo Sacerdote met in unconventional places. They gathered wherever they could find space. Meanwhile the Virgen del Trabajo parish found a home in a neighborhood built for workers.
Over time the map of Madrid evolved. New neighborhoods emerged. By the 1990s it became clear that a reorganization was needed. In 2003 the parishes of Santísimo Cristo del Amparo and Virgen del Trabajo merged. They took on the name Parroquia de Cristo Sacerdote. This recovered the original name of one of the area’s first parishes.
Before its own building was erected, the Parroquia de Cristo Sacerdote operated out of the Monastery of the Carmelites. For nearly 40 years the Carmelites provided crucial support. They offered their chapel for services. They offered space for pastoral activities.
Finally in 2003 the Parroquia de Cristo Sacerdote inaugurated its new temple on Calle López de Aranda. This marked a turning point. The church finally had a dedicated space. The construction was initiated by D. Félix González Álvarez. The construction was completed thanks to the design of architects D. Alfonso Burón García and Dª. Mercedes de Miguel Sánchez. Bishop D. Antonio María Rouco consecrated the new temple. The old Virgen del Trabajo became a chapel for the I.N.I. neighborhood.
Many individuals have contributed to the Parroquia de Cristo Sacerdote over the years. Their dedication and service have shaped its history. They include priests such as D. Miguel Ángel Osorno Mingo and D. José Paz Serrano. Also priests such as D. José María Jiménez Velandia and D. Basilio Grajal Rodríguez.
Today the Parroquia de Cristo Sacerdote continues to serve its community. It offers regular masses. Masses are held on weekdays and weekends. Also the church supports various initiatives. People can donate through various means. Donations can be done via bank transfer or Bizum.
