From its humble beginnings in 1842 the Iglesia Bautista Central stands as a testament to faith and resilience. It started as the Laight Street Baptist Church in Lower Manhattan. This small congregation found a home in a former Presbyterian church a Greco-Italianate structure built in 1825. They flourished there for nearly two decades. Then in 1861 the church relocated to West 42nd Street near Seventh Avenue. This was another former Presbyterian Church built in the 1840s.

The Iglesia Bautista Central wasn’t always on its present location. The church underwent a significant transformation in the early 1900s. Times Square was booming. Businesses and theatres were sprouting up. Many residents moved uptown. The congregation followed suit. They sold their 42nd Street property for a reported 465000 dollars. A major merger happened in 1916. The Central Baptist Church merged with the Riverside Baptist Church. This church was situated on Amsterdam Avenue at 92nd Street. It was housed in a building designed by Edelmann & Smith and built in 1888.

The present Iglesia Bautista Central building is a masterpiece. It’s designed in the English Gothic style. Architect Walter Cook created a stunning edifice of Germantown stone and Indiana limestone. The cornerstone was laid on May 6 1916. The church’s dedication took place on October 7 1917. The building’s facade faces 92nd Street. A square tower graces the corner. The Iglesia Bautista Central’s organ is a marvel. The George S Hutchings & Co organ from Boston boasts three manuals and 42 stops. It’s an electro-pneumatic masterpiece.

The Iglesia Bautista Central’s history is interwoven with the lives of its members. One notable pastor was the Reverend Robert W Lowery. He was a prolific hymnist of the 19th century. He wrote beloved hymns such as “Nothing but the Blood” and “Shall We Gather at the River”. These hymns continue to resonate with congregations worldwide. The Iglesia Bautista Central is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to faith community and perseverance. It’s a place where generations have found solace hope and spiritual nourishment. The story of the Iglesia Bautista Central is a story of adaptation growth and unwavering devotion. It’s a story that continues to unfold.
