“Plaut Triangle is really part of our community.” That is what Chrissy Voskerichian, co-founder of the Station Road Civic Association, said. She walks her dog through it almost every day.
Today, we’re standing at Plaut Triangle. It is a small but significant park. This triangle of green offers a peaceful escape. It sits along Northern Boulevard between 169th and 170th Streets. Let’s uncover its story.
Plaut Triangle was gifted to the city in 1923. Frank W. Plaut, a Flushing native, made this generous donation. He was deeply involved in civic affairs. Plaut’s home was just across the street. He not only donated the land. He also paid for the park’s construction and upkeep during his lifetime.
Frank W. Plaut was born in 1884 and passed away in 1949. He grew up near St. Mary’s Cemetery. Later, he lived in Long Island City after marrying Katherine Siebert in 1917. The family eventually settled at 43-12 170th Street in Auburndale. Plaut was known as an outgoing and spirited citizen. He was an active member of the Flushing Democratic Club.
The Station Road Civic Association adopted Plaut Triangle eight years ago. They have been instrumental in its care. Members regularly clean litter. They plant flowers and weed the area. Their dedication keeps this treasure beautiful.
Recently, the city has allocated $200,000 for improvements. These upgrades mark the first major changes since the Civic started caring for it. The Department of Transportation has already begun replacing damaged sidewalks around the park. Soon, Parks will plant new trees, bushes, and shrubs. The fence will be painted. The walkway will be repaired. Decorative paving blocks, additional benches, and a drinking fountain will be installed.
These improvements will be carried out over the next year. Planting will follow appropriate cycles. The aim is to enhance this space for everyone.
Voskerichian noted that the triangle is a beautiful place. People can relax and escape the business of life. It’s popular among seniors and neighbors. They enjoy sitting down with a good book.
