Gazing at Schloss Freisaal, can you believe it started as a “pleasure hall”? Schloss Freisaal, nestled in Salzburg’s southern green belt, first appeared in records in 1392. Its name, evolving from “Freudensaal,” reveals its original purpose. Prince-Archbishop Pilgrim II. von Puchheim used it as a pleasure castle. Later, Schloss Freisaal became a vital part of a grand ceremony. Newly elected prince-archbishops received symbols of their power here. They then began their official procession into Salzburg. Imagine the spectacle. This tradition, known as the Adventus, mirrored Roman imperial processions. It symbolized the transfer of power. A fresco by Hans Bocksberger the Elder, painted in 1558, captures this vibrant tradition. The fresco showcases Archbishop Michael von Kuenburg’s grand entrance. The painting preserves not only the event but also one of the earliest depictions of the Salzburg Cathedral choir. Schloss Freisaal underwent renovations in 1549 under Ernst von Bayern. This gave the castle its Mannerist style and established its status as a moated castle. The castle continued to be remodeled over time. In 1907, it was transformed into a villa. Some of those alterations were later reversed. Today, Schloss Freisaal remains private property, unavailable to the public. But, standing here, you can still appreciate its history. It evolved from a pleasure hall to a vital part of Salzburg’s archiepiscopal tradition.
