Does the name Dioscuri ring a bell? The Castor und Pollux Sculpture here in Potsdam represents these twin deities. They were revered in Greek and Roman mythology.

This sculpture is not just a depiction of divine figures. It’s a copy of an ancient Roman sculpture from the 1st century AD. The original is now housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. It’s known as the San Ildefonso Group.

The figures you see are Castor and Pollux. They are offering a sacrifice to Persephone. This interpretation is supported by details within the sculpture. Notice the right-hand figure. He holds two torches. One is downturned and rests on a flower-wreathed altar. The other is upturned behind his back. The woman’s sphere is thought to be an egg. This represents the egg from which the Dioscuri were born.

The statue stands 161 cm tall. It shows two idealized nude youths. Both wear laurel wreaths. They lean against each other. An altar is to their left. It holds a small female figure.

Initially, the figure on the left was headless. In the 17th century, Ippolito Buzzi restored it. He used a bust of Antinous from another statue. This led to various misinterpretations. People once thought the sculpture depicted Antinous and Hadrian. Others suggested Hypnos and Thanatos. There was even a theory about Orestes and Pylades.

Johann Winckelmann was the first to publish the sculpture. He did so in 1767. Goethe also owned a cast of the group.

This copy of Castor und Pollux has its own history here in Potsdam. Francesco Menghi created it. It first stood near the hippodrome in the park. Since 1885, it has been at this location. Sadly, it has been damaged recently.

Many copies of the San Ildefonso Group exist. They were produced throughout Italy and Northern Europe. These copies helped spread interest in the sculpture.

The original sculpture has an interesting history. By 1623, it was in the Ludovisi collection in Rome. Queen Christina of Sweden later acquired it. Eventually, it made its way to Spain. Isabella Farnese bought it for Philip V. She had it sent to the Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso. From there, it entered the Prado Museum’s collection.

The Castor und Pollux Sculpture represents neo-Attic eclecticism. It combines two different aesthetic styles. The right-hand youth is Polyclitean. The left-hand one is Praxitelean. This blend creates a captivating visual harmony.

So, as you stand before this marble copy, remember its journey. It’s a story of artistic interpretation. It shows historical appreciation and the enduring appeal of classical mythology.
