Gazing up at the McGinley Center, have you ever wondered what secrets it holds? The McGinley Center isn’t just a building at Fordham University. It’s a vibrant hub, a testament to Fordham’s ever-evolving spirit. This story begins in February 2021, with the opening of a striking 71,000-square-foot, four-story addition. This addition transformed the McGinley Center into a dynamic space, blending modern amenities with Fordham’s rich history. Imagine working out in a state-of-the-art fitness center, spanning 20,000 square feet. Picture yourself on a Jacob’s Ladder, a unique climbing simulator. Then, transition to a yoga session in one of the two new classrooms. Notice the exposed, unfinished concrete arches of the original McGinley Center, a subtle nod to the past. The Corinthian granite facade echoes the Rose Hill Gym next door, a “remix” of Fordham’s architectural palette. Descend to the first floor and step into the student lounge, a spacious area with 17-foot ceilings, exposed wiring, and a mix of modern and playful furniture. A foosball table stands ready for a friendly match. A large table nearby can accommodate a gathering of 16. Glass-enclosed meeting rooms offer a quiet space for collaboration. This lounge is designed as a welcoming space for both resident and commuter students. Cross over to the multi-level gallery, a glass-covered space connecting the new addition with the existing McGinley Center. Natural light floods this area, illuminating the stone engravings of the Stations of the Cross. After the final phase of construction, this gallery will seamlessly integrate with a refurbished marketplace dining facility. Ascend to the second floor, home to the expanded Career Center, Campus Ministry, and Center for Community Engaged Learning. The Career Center boasts a light-filled lounge, a pantry, and ten interview rooms with noise-dampening panels and electronic glass walls. Next door, Campus Ministry and the Center for Community Engaged Learning provide reflection rooms, a conference room, and smaller gathering spaces. This floor fosters collaboration and a sense of community. Finally, ascend to the top floor, a breathtaking multipurpose space with a 28-foot ceiling open to the sky. Take in the panoramic views: the New York Botanical Garden to the north, Bahoshy Field to the west, and Hughes Hall and Edwards Parade to the south. This space, accommodating up to 196 people, embodies Fordham’s neo-Gothic aesthetic. The Stations of the Cross occupy a central place on the back wall. The McGinley Center is more than a building. It’s the heart of Fordham, a beacon for students and faculty alike. This transformative project, culminating in 2025, honors Fordham’s history while embracing the future.
