A whisper of history hangs in the air. We stand before the Jüdischer Friedhof in Mannheim. This isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a living testament to a community’s enduring spirit.

The Jüdischer Friedhof opened in 1842. It replaced an older cemetery in the city center. That older cemetery had served Mannheim’s Jewish community since 1661. The first burial here took place on August 13 1842. It continues to be used for burials today. The older graves remain undisturbed. This is a testament to Jewish tradition.

A somber chapter unfolds in 1938. Under pressure from then-mayor Carl Renninger the Jewish community was forced to sell the old Jüdischer Friedhof. Over 3500 bodies were exhumed. They were moved to a mass grave here. Many tombstones from the old cemetery were destroyed. This was a horrific act of barbarism. A few tombstones survived. They now surround the mass grave.

The Jüdischer Friedhof in Neckarstadt-Ost was spared the worst of the 1938 pogroms. However the prayer hall and mortuary were destroyed on November 10 1938.

A database preserves the memories. It includes names of those buried here since 1842. It also includes names from the old cemetery. The names of those in the mass grave however are lost to time. The database combines burial lists and photographic documentation. These photos date from 1986 and 2008. Volunteers meticulously documented the cemetery. They continue to preserve the history of this place.

The Jüdischer Friedhof in Mannheim is more than just stones and names. It is a poignant reminder of resilience. It is a place of remembrance and reflection.
