What if I told you about a place where nine communities united? A place called Landhagen. Landhagen isn’t a town itself. It’s an Amt, a type of administrative unit, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Formed in 1992, it brought together nine municipalities: Behrenhoff, Dargelin, Dersekow, Hinrichshagen, Levenhagen, Mesekenhagen, Neuenkirchen, Wackerow, and Weitenhagen. They joined forces to manage their administrative tasks more efficiently. Interestingly, there was a “Gemeinde Landhagen” back in 1938, encompassing several of these communities. Now, the administrative heart of this Amt beats in Neuenkirchen. Landhagen spreads around the vibrant city of Greifswald and along the Greifswalder Bodden, following the Ryck River’s lowlands. Bordered by the Amt Züssow to the south, the Baltic Sea and Greifswald to the north, the Vorpommern-Rügen district to the west, and the Amt Lubmin to the east, it’s a region of gentle landscapes. You won’t find towering mountains or expansive lakes here. Although the islands of Riems and Koos lie just offshore, they belong to Greifswald. Tourism thrives in Landhagen, thanks to its proximity to Greifswald and the Baltic Sea. Several industrial estates have sprung up around Greifswald. Major roads like the A20 Autobahn, as well as the B109 and B96 federal highways, crisscross the Amt, connecting it to the wider world. So, next time you hear the name Landhagen, remember it’s more than just a name on a map. It’s a story of communities coming together, a testament to collaboration, and a gateway to the beauty of the Baltic coast.
