Cars once roamed freely through Berlin’s streets, a different time. Today, we stand before the Verband der Automobilindustrie, or VDA, a key player in Germany’s automotive world. The VDA’s story began long ago. It started in 1901 in Eisenach as the Verein Deutscher Motorfahrzeug-Industrieller or VDMI. Imagine those early days of motoring. Pioneers gathered to shape a burgeoning industry.

Gustav Vischer of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft was its first chairman. Eugène de Dietrich served as his deputy. Other founders included figures from Adlerwerke, Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach, and Opel. The VDMI championed road traffic. It fought against burdensome regulations. They also pushed for customs protection.

In 1923, the organization changed its name to Reichsverband der Automobilindustrie or RDA. By 1928, it had its own building on Hardenbergstraße in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Wilhelm Scholz was its General Secretary from 1923 to 1935. The RDA faced challenges during the Nazi era. In 1934, its responsibilities shifted to the Wirtschaftsgruppe Fahrzeugindustrie. The RDA focused on asset management, auto shows, and the Volkswagen project.

After World War II, in September 1945, the Produktionsausschuss der Automobilindustrie or PADA was founded in Hanover-Linden. On May 2, 1946, it was renamed Verband der Automobilindustrie. The VDA that we know today.

The Verband der Automobilindustrie represents German car manufacturers and suppliers. It has around 620 member companies. The VDA is known for its close ties to politics, especially the German government. It serves as a powerful lobbying force. Hildegard Müller is the current president of the VDA. She assumed the role on February 1, 2020. Erika Emmerich was the first woman to hold the position. She was president from 1989 to 1996.

The VDA has several key functions. It advocates for its members’ interests. It fosters dialogue among them. It also develops industry standards. These include recommendations for logistics and EDI in the automotive sector. The VDA organizes the Internationale Automobilausstellung or IAA. This major auto show alternates between Munich and Hanover.

The VDA also publishes numerous reports and documents. These cover annual reports, position papers, statistics, and testing guidelines. It once advocated for the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership or TTIP.

The Verband der Automobilindustrie continues to shape the automotive landscape. It navigates challenges like digital transformation and sustainability. The VDA remains a central voice for the German automotive industry. It connects a rich past with an evolving future.
