Fo Guang Shan started with the purchase of land in Kaohsiung County, Taiwan. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 16, 1967. Construction projects followed. These included university buildings, shrines and a cemetery. The iconic 36-metre tall statue of Amitābha Buddha was consecrated in 1975. The Great Hero Hall was built in 1981.

In 1997, Hsing Yun closed the mountain gate of Fo Guang Shan to the public. He wanted to give monastics a cloistered atmosphere. However, the monastery reopened to some extent in 2000. This provided the public a place to practice Pure Land Buddhism. Fo Guang Shan headquarters is the largest monastery in Taiwan. It has over 300 branches throughout Taiwan.

Fo Guang Shan has expanded into mainland China. There, it focuses on charity and Chinese cultural revival. This avoids conflict with the Chinese Communist Party.

As of 2017, Fo Guang Shan had over 1,000 monastics. It also had over 1 million followers worldwide. Branches exist in fifty countries. Hsing Yun died in 2023 at the age of 95.

Fo Guang Shan emphasizes education and service. It runs universities, colleges, libraries and art galleries. It also provides mobile medical clinics.

The social programs of Fo Guang Shan include free medical clinics. They serve remote villages. There is also a winter relief program. This distributes clothing and food to those in need. The organization runs orphanages, homes for the elderly and drug rehabilitation programs.
