Now, let us delve into the broader context of Hanover’s history. Hanover, known as Hannover in German, boasts a rich past. From 1692 to 1945, it was a prominent state in northwestern Germany. Initially, it was an electorate of the Holy Roman Empire, later becoming a kingdom and finally a Prussian province.

Key figures like George III and Carl Friedrich Gauss played significant roles in Hanover’s development. After World War II, Hanover was administratively abolished. Its former territory now constitutes about 80 percent of the state of Lower Saxony.

Hanover’s story began in the early 17th century. It emerged from the division of territories of the Welf house of Brunswick-Lüneburg. In 1638, it was established as the principality of Brunswick-Calenberg-Göttingen. The city was named after its principal town, Hanover.

Ernest Augustus I united the principality with Lüneburg. He cleverly married his son George Louis to Sophia Dorothea of Celle. Sophia was the only daughter of George William, duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Upon the duke’s death in 1705, the two states formally joined.

In 1692, Ernest Augustus secured the designation of his principality. Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I named it the ninth electorate of the empire. Officially, it was Brunswick-Lüneburg, but it was commonly known as Hanover.

Ernest Augustus’s marriage to Sophia of the Palatinate had significant implications. Sophia was the granddaughter of James I of Great Britain. The British Act of Settlement in 1701 designated her as the heiress to the British crown after Queen Anne. Sophia died shortly before Anne in 1714. Her son, George Louis, then became George I. He was the first of five monarchs from the house of Hanover to rule both Hanover and Great Britain.

The court of Electress Sophia became a cultural hub. It was enriched by figures like George Frideric Handel and G.W. Leibniz. While George I and George II frequently visited Hanover, George III never did. George IV and William IV each visited only once. A ministry in Hanover, associated with the German chancellery in London, effectively governed the electorate in their absence.

Hanover expanded its territory to the North Sea. It acquired Bremen and Verden in 1715 and the bishopric of Osnabrück in 1803. During Britain’s wars, Hanover often faced invasions. It was even called Britain’s “Achilles’ heel” in continental Europe. The Prussians seized it in 1801 and 1805. The French occupied it in 1803 and 1806. Later, part of Hanover was incorporated into the French empire. The rest became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia, created by Napoleon I for his brother Jérôme Bonaparte.

After Napoleon’s fall in 1814, Hanover was re-established as a kingdom. This was largely due to British influence. It acquired Hildesheim, Eichsfeld, East Frisia, Bentheim, Lingen, and Emsland. It became the fourth-largest German state. Only Austria, Prussia, and Bavaria were larger.
