In 2020, TU Dublin East Quad opened its doors. It became fully operational. Now, it accommodates 10,000 students. This new cultural hub is home to students of Music, Drama, Creative Arts, Media, Law, Social Sciences and Languages.
The vision for TU Dublin was simple. It was to be the first choice in Ireland for higher education. Consolidating departments into one masterplan addressed the isolation of departments across the city. It also positioned the university at the forefront of third-level education in Ireland.
TU Dublin East Quad is a centre of excellence for cross-discipline learning. Formal and informal spaces encourage collaboration. They allow people across disciplines to connect. They can discuss ideas together. The unique design encourages exploration of the building.
Acoustics were carefully considered. The design includes a “room within a room” approach. This isolates internal surfaces from the external building structure. Sprung timber floors enhance performance spaces. Curtains and blinds adjust acoustics to suit different performances.
Energy use was a key design criterion. The focus was on reducing demand. It optimized building performance. It uses solar gain in summer. It limits heat loss in winter.
Nearly half of the spaces are naturally ventilated. Specialist performance spaces are mechanically ventilated. This is due to high occupancy and acoustic needs.
The brass cladding surrounding the 400-seater concert hall strikes the eye. It reflects the Conservatoire’s legacy of musical education dating back 130 years. Besides the concert hall, the East Quad has an 80-seat Black Box Theatre. There is also an 80-seat Recital Hall. All are accessible to the public.
The fluid layout supports artistic practice. It promotes interdisciplinary synergies. Facilities are available to all TU Dublin students. External spaces are conducive to performance. They also allow media projection and sculpture exhibition.
