On Staten Island’s south shore, a beacon of faith stands tall: the Staten Island Islamic Masjid. This mosque, established in 2017, was a response to the growing Muslim community in this traditionally conservative part of New York City. Before its establishment, Muslims like Karim Azzit, one of the mosque’s founders, often found themselves travelling long distances to pray. The need for a local place of worship became clear. Today, the Staten Island Islamic Masjid, housed in a former real estate office, offers a spacious sanctuary for prayer. The mosque’s Friday services are so well-attended that they are held twice to accommodate the growing congregation. Beyond prayer, the Staten Island Islamic Masjid seeks to bridge communities and foster understanding. It aims to educate the wider community about Islam and its tenets, dispelling misconceptions. While challenges exist, the mosque stands as a testament to the resilience and growth of the Muslim community on Staten Island’s south shore. Its presence underscores the importance of faith, community, and understanding in a diverse world.
