Did you know SC Frankfurt 1880 boasts a history stretching back to 1880? It all began with a merger of two rugby teams Germania and Franconia Frankfurt. Herrmann Stasny a prominent sports figure spearheaded this union. The newly formed club initially played a form of rugby football distinct from the later association football. They played their games in red and black colours a tradition started after an early game against the Blackheath club in London in 1894. The Blackheath club gifted the SC Frankfurt 1880 the right to use these colours.
SC Frankfurt 1880 isn’t just about rugby though. It’s a multi-sport club with a rich legacy. The club expanded its sporting activities to include hockey in 1902. A pivotal moment came in 1907. Moritz Freiherr von Bissing donated the Silver Shield. This traveling trophy for German hockey clubs significantly boosted the sport’s popularity. It ultimately helped establish the German Hockey Federation in 1909.
The club’s journey involved numerous moves. They played on the Körnerwiese the Palmengarten and the Louisa before settling at their current location on Adickesallee in Nordend in 1923. Richard Merton and others were instrumental in this move. Imagine the dedication required.
The club flourished between the wars having rugby hockey tennis athletics and winter sports sections by 1924. Milly Reuter a member of the athletics section set a world record in javelin throw in 1926. She threw it 38.36 meters. The Second World War temporarily halted sporting activities.
After the war SC Frankfurt 1880’s resurgence started in 1945. They only played hockey and rugby at first. The club’s grounds expanded to 70000 square meters in 1958. The 1960s and 70s brought major success especially in hockey. Their men’s team won their first German championship in 1968 and went on to win the European Cup five times between 1971 and 1975. Three of these victories were on home soil in Frankfurt.
Throughout the 1980s and 90s the club underwent modernization upgrading its facilities. They added a tennis and squash hall in 1978. Two grass pitches became artificial turf pitches in 1980 and 1989. A new clubhouse Das Clubhaus opened in 1999. The addition of lacrosse in 2004 further diversified their offerings.
Today SC Frankfurt 1880 remains a powerhouse in German sports. With almost 2500 members. It is one of Frankfurt’s largest sports clubs. It’s a testament to the club’s enduring spirit and its commitment to fostering a diverse sporting environment.
