Remembering Prince Hoang Chan’s bravery is what brings us here to Voi Phuc Temple. It is a serene escape in Hanoi.

Voi Phuc Temple is not just a temple. It is a story etched in stone and spirit. It stands as one of the Thang Long Tu Tran. These are the four sacred temples guarding the cardinal points of the ancient Thang Long citadel. Voi Phuc Temple watches over the West.

Let’s step back to 1065 during the Ly Thanh Tong dynasty. This is when the temple was erected. It honors Linh Lang Dai Vuong. He is also known as Prince Hoang Chan. He was the son of King Ly Thai Tong.

Legend says Prince Hoang Chan was no ordinary prince. He led his troops against Tong invaders. He fought valiantly. The prince died in battle. To honor his courage, the king built Voi Phuc Temple. He ordered two stone elephants to kneel before it. These kneeling elephants gave the temple its name, Voi Phuc. Voi means elephant. Phuc means kneeling.

Over the centuries, Voi Phuc Temple became more than a monument. It became a cultural touchstone. Generations have revered Linh Lang. They see him as a protector of the city.

Look at the architecture of Voi Phuc Temple. It reflects traditional Vietnamese design. Though renovated over the years, it remains true to its roots.

Notice the entrance gate. Two elephant statues kneel respectfully. They remind us of the prince’s battle cry. It is said they knelt upon hearing it.

The courtyard spreads before us. It is paved in stone. The middle path is reserved for special processions. Observe the square well. It symbolizes gathering water for happiness.

The main hall is the heart of Voi Phuc Temple. It is where the community gathers to worship. The hall is built in the shape of the word “Cong”. This symbolizes the connection between heaven and earth. The roof is covered with curved tiles. They are crafted in the ancient style.

Inside Voi Phuc Temple, you will find the statue of Linh Lang Dai Vuong. Before the statue sits a large stone in a glass box. Legend claims the god rested his head on this stone.

Look at the decorative elements around the temple. Notice the intricate carvings. See the gilded statues. Admire the couplets. Each element adds to the temple’s sacred atmosphere.

Voi Phuc Temple is a place of reverence. It reminds us of a heroic prince. It connects us to the spirit of old Thang Long. It stands as a testament to Vietnamese culture.

Each year, the Voi Phuc Temple Festival honors Linh Lang Genie. It takes place from the 9th to the 11th day of the second lunar month. People come from all over to participate.

As you leave Voi Phuc Temple, remember its story. Remember Prince Hoang Chan’s sacrifice. Remember the kneeling elephants. They symbolize respect and gratitude. Voi Phuc Temple is more than a historical site. It is a living legacy of courage, culture, and community.
