A curious blend of Art Deco and Modernism greets you. Welcome to Square Jules Algoet Jules Algoetsquare in Anderlecht. This isn’t just any square. It’s a hidden gem a testament to Brussels’ architectural evolution.

Square Jules Algoet Jules Algoetsquare holds a fascinating history. Originally two neoclassical houses stood here. One was built in 1878. In 1941-1942 they were transformed. The transformation was commissioned by a food fat manufacturer. The result is the striking industrial building you see today. Architects Charles Crickx and Marit left their mark. Their signature is visible on the ground floor.

Notice the building’s geometric forms. Note the use of materials and colors. This reflects the Art Deco and Modernist trends of the era. The beige ceramic tiles on the ground floor contrast beautifully. The yellow brick upper floors stand out. The black ceramic frames add a sleek touch. The ceramic is from the Helman company. You can spot their stamp under the architects’ signature. That’s a little detail many miss.

The building is large four sections high and four levels tall. It sits under a gable roof. The central sections on the upper floors are broader. The first is the narrowest. Some original woodwork remains on the ground floor a subtle clue to the past.

The street-facing and rear buildings were repurposed into housing in 2003. Square Jules Algoet Jules Algoetsquare stands as a reminder. It’s a reminder of industrial innovation. It’s also a reminder of architectural adaptation in Brussels. Today it’s a peaceful space a quiet contrast to the city’s bustling energy. So take a moment.
