Moschato boasts a rich history. It’s situated on the beautiful Phaleron Bay coast. East of the Cephissus river mouth lies this bustling town. Moschato is only 6 km southwest of Athens city center. It’s also conveniently located 3 km east of Piraeus. The southern end of the A1 motorway runs right through Moschato connecting Athens to Thessaloniki and beyond.
Notice Poseidonos Avenue. It runs along the coast. Peiraios Street is another important road found in the north. Moschato has two main squares. Metamorfoseos Sotiris Square is one. It has the church of Aghia Sotira. Iroon Polytechneiou Square is the other. It’s home to the City Hall.
Moschato experiences a hot semi-arid climate. Winters are mild. Summers are hot. Summer nights stay particularly warm. This area is known as the Athens Riviera.
Moschato’s Carnival is legendary. It’s one of the biggest and most exciting in all of Attica. The celebrations are held about two weeks before Clean Monday. Festivities take place throughout Moschato especially at the municipal tent on Korai Street. Delegations from across Greece and even other countries come to celebrate. There’s even a huge treasure hunt for teenagers. It lasts for the entire two weeks. It involves games singing contests and citywide treasure hunts. Prizes trips and many other gifts are awarded to lucky participants.
The local fair takes place on August 6th. Festivities start on the 5th when the Aghia Sotira church observes its religious holiday. Moschato also has a metro station. It’s served by Athens Metro Line 1. This connects it to Piraeus and central Athens. Numerous bus routes also serve Moschato.
Moschato’s population has steadily grown. In 1941 it was 12913. By 1981 it had increased to 21138. It continued growing to 22039 in 1991. In 2001 it reached 23153. By 2011 it was 25441. The most recent census in 2021 recorded 25322 residents.
