Do you know that Xã Thuận Mỹ was formed by merging two villages? These villages were Thuận Lễ and Chí Mỹ. This happened during the French colonial period in the early 20th century.
Xã Thuận Mỹ is a part of Châu Thành district in Long An province. It sits in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. Many of the first residents came from central Vietnam. They followed Nguyễn Dynasty officials. These people settled the land and established villages. Among them were people with the last names Nguyễn and Lê. They were the most numerous. Every year on the ninth day of the first lunar month descendants organize Đám Việc Lễ. This is to remember and express gratitude to the pioneers. They offer simple items to gods.
Xã Thuận Mỹ is in the eastern part of Châu Thành district. It shares borders with several areas. To the east is Cần Đước district across the Vàm Cỏ river. To the west is Thanh Phú Long commune. To the south is Thanh Vĩnh Đông commune. To the north are Tân Trụ and Cần Đước districts.
The area of Xã Thuận Mỹ is 21.95 square kilometers. In 1999 the population was 11659 people. The population density was 531 people per square kilometer. Xã Thuận Mỹ is divided into nine hamlets. These are Bình Thạnh 1 Bình Thạnh 2 and Bình Thạnh 3. Also included are Bình Trị 1 Bình Trị 2 and Bình An. The remaining ones are Bình Khương Bình Thới 1 and Bình Thới 2.
Bình Trị 1 was chosen as the administrative center. Most important facilities are here. This includes the People’s Committee headquarters and a medical station. There is also a school and a market. Provincial Road 827 runs through Xã Thuận Mỹ. It connects Thanh Phú Long commune to Thanh Vĩnh Đông commune.
