A vision revealed to Sister Harriet Steward, showing a place of worship where none existed before. The New Jerusalem Baptist Church’s story begins not in a grand building, but a humble “Brush Arbor.” This simple structure hosted the first services in 1886. Later, a building was erected and named “Hackett’s Hill.” The early days were slow going. Progress on the building and improvements were gradual. But those Hackett’s Hill memories, they became cornerstones of the New Jerusalem Baptist Church’s identity. They still resonate within the community today. In 1912, Rev. John Smith stepped in as the first official pastor of New Jerusalem Baptist Church. A group of dedicated men served as deacons: J.T. Braxton, Sr., Ned Holmes, J.T. Braxton, Jr., Robert Fisher, Henry Odds, Emanuel Fisher, H.A. Johnson, and Harry Thompson. The trustees included Fisher, A. Paige, J. Thompson, and Bob Pierce. These names represent the foundation upon which New Jerusalem Baptist Church stands. They guided the church through its formative years.
