Elvekum, a Stadtteil of Neuss within the Rosellen district, first appeared in written records in 1181 as “Elvechem”. Imagine, if you will, the village in its infancy, a small cluster of homes amidst a landscape untouched by modern development. Elvekum in 2013 was a tranquil haven for just 319 residents. As you stand here, in the quiet embrace of Elvekum, cast your mind back to 2006. The village celebrated 825 years since its first documented mention, a testament to its enduring presence. A significant landmark divides Elvekum, literally and figuratively. The Cologne-Neuss railway line, established in 1855, cuts through the village. This division has shaped Elvekum’s identity. Remarkably, traces of human activity in Elvekum date back even further. Archaeological finds reveal settlements from the Neolithic period, hinting at a rich, prehistoric past. Elvekum wasn’t always the peaceful village you see today. In 1794, the French Revolution’s tendrils reached this quiet corner of Germany, as troops occupied the village. Elvekum’s religious heart beats within St. Aloysius Chapel, a testament to the village’s strong Catholic faith. Built between 1904 and 1905 by the villagers themselves, the chapel celebrated its centennial in 2005, a joyous occasion for the community. Today, the chapel remains a cherished gathering place. Elvekum is more than just charming houses. It also boasts a war memorial, a poignant reminder of past conflicts. Built in 1950–1951 and dedicated in 1951, the memorial serves as a place of reflection and remembrance. A reconstructed fountain, standing on the foundations of its 300-year-old predecessor, graces the village. A wayside shrine and a wayside cross from 1855 add to the village’s historic charm. Despite its small size, Elvekum is home to a vibrant community. The “Einigkeit” Elvekum 1920 e. V. club and the Kapellenverein Elvekum e.V. contribute to the village’s social fabric. The St. Martinskomitee Elvekum ensures the continuation of this beloved tradition.
