Agricultural Genetics Institute

Established in 1984 as the Agricultural Genetics Center, the Agricultural Genetics Institute has a rich history. It began under the leadership of Professor Phan Phai, a prominent figure in agricultural science. Initially, the center operated under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry. A pivotal moment came in 1989. The Agricultural Genetics Center transformed into the Agricultural Genetics Institute. This change solidified its role as a key research institution. This institute fell under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, which is now known as the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Another significant shift occurred in 2005. The Agricultural Genetics Institute became part of the Vietnamese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. This integration broadened the institute’s reach and collaborative potential. The Agricultural Genetics Institute is located on Pham Van Dong Street in Hanoi’s Tu Liem district. The institute focuses on genetic and biotechnological advancements in agriculture. They study the rules of genetics and variation at different levels, from molecular and cellular to individual and population levels in plants and microorganisms. They also work with advanced technologies like recombinant DNA and nanotechnology for plant genome analysis. Their research contributes to diversifying genetic resources and creating materials for plant and microorganism breeding. The Agricultural Genetics Institute also develops and applies bioinformatics. This helps them build databases of plant genomes and microorganisms. These databases include information like gene maps, gene sequences, gene functions, genetically modified plants, and genetically modified products. Additionally, they work on technological solutions for protecting biological agriculture, biodiversity, and biosafety. They even play a role in technology transfer and agricultural extension in genetics and biotechnology.
