Ever wondered why Cali is called a piece of heaven? The answer lies partly within the walls of Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima.

Let’s step closer to Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima. It is more than just a church. It is a living testament to Cali’s rich history and deep-rooted faith.

Back in 1678, Don Juan Lasso de los Arcos y Ríos the city’s mayor decided to build a chapel. He chose a spot to the west, near the meeting point of the Aguacatal and Cali rivers. This chapel was dedicated to Santa Rosa de Lima. She had just been canonized and declared the patron saint of Peru.

However, nature had other plans. The Aguacatal and Cali rivers washed the chapel away. It was as if Mother Earth herself wanted a grander structure for Santa Rosa de Lima.

In 1684, they rebuilt the chapel in El Peñón. Finally, in 1696, it found its permanent home in the Carnicería neighborhood. The city council donated two plots of land for this purpose. This is where Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima stands today.

The image of Santa Rosa arrived in 1944. It watches over everyone who kneels before it. She is framed by two towering structures. These towers reach 40 meters into the sky. From here you can appreciate the beauty of houses adorned with clay tiles.

Santa Rosa de Lima was the first saint canonized in Latin America. The Vatican recognized her sacrifice and service to others. She died at 31 from tuberculosis. Her life became an example of devotion to God. She is surely the best benefactor for this splendid architectural work of this great city.

Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima stands as the third parish in Cali. San Pedro Apóstol and San Nicolás were the first two. In a remarkable turn the Pope Francis declared a Jubilee year. The year was announced during the church’s first centennial celebration. Parishioners could receive plenary indulgence by visiting the church.

Monseñor Luis Fernando Rodríguez Velásquez the Archbishop of Cali emphasized the importance of the church. He said it should be a path and center for reconciliation.

Each year, thousands of visitors come to Cali. They enjoy the city’s cuisine, landscapes, and dance. Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima offers reflection and spirituality. It enhances Cali’s diverse appeal.

So, when you visit Cali remember to visit Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima. Take with you the most beautiful memory of holiness, in this small extension of heaven.
