High above the Erzgebirge foothills stands the Maria-Josepha-Turm. Its steel lattice structure pierces the sky. A testament to human ingenuity and a tribute to a princess.

The Maria-Josepha-Turm isn’t just a tower. It’s a story etched in steel. A story of vision and community. It began in 1886. Two Erzgebirge branches of a hiking association. They dreamed of a viewpoint. A place to showcase the breathtaking panorama. The Schlosserei Viktor Ludwig of Grüna built it. It cost 3250 Marks. The original tower stood 22 meters tall. From its vantage point visitors could see for miles. On clear days even the Völkerschlachtdenkmal in Leipzig was visible. Named after Maria Josepha of Saxony. She married Archduke Otto Franz Joseph of Austria that same year. Her father Prince Georg of Saxony was the protector of the Erzgebirge association. The tower became a beloved destination. Visitors enjoyed refreshments beneath it during the summer.

Sadly time and weather took their toll. The original tower was demolished in 1953. It was deemed structurally unsound. A massive radio tower replaced it. But the spirit of the original Maria-Josepha-Turm lived on. In 1998 a new tower was constructed. This time it’s a 30-meter-high steel structure. Its design mirrors its predecessor. The inscription “Dem Berg zur Zierde den Menschen zur Freude” graces its base. This translates to “To the mountain’s adornment to the people’s joy”. The new Maria-Josepha-Turm is free to climb. It continues to offer magnificent views of the Erzgebirge.

As you stand before the Maria-Josepha-Turm today imagine the people who built it. Imagine the countless hikers who have enjoyed its view. It is more than a viewpoint. It’s a symbol of resilience. A reminder of a shared past and a beacon for the future. It’s a story worth sharing. A story worth remembering. And a view worth experiencing.
