Amidst the lively ambiance of Deer Park, the Munda Gumbad stands as a weathered sentinel of history. The Munda Gumbad is a historical pavilion nestled within the verdant expanse of Hauz Khas, Delhi. Its name, “Munda Gumbad,” meaning “headless dome,” speaks to the ravages of time upon its structure. The dome and upper story are believed to have been eroded over centuries, leaving behind a fascinating remnant of its former grandeur. Originally built by Alauddin Khilji in 1295 AD, the Munda Gumbad sits on a raised mound overlooking what was once a vast water tank. This tank, known as Hauz Khas Lake, provided water to the city of Siri, ruled by both Alauddin Khilji and Muhammad Tughlaq. Imagine the scene centuries ago: the pavilion standing proudly in the center of the sprawling tank, connected to the city by a causeway. Wars and the passage of time took their toll on the tank. By the time Firoz Shah Tughlaq came to power, it was partially destroyed. He meticulously reconstructed it, reinforcing the embankments with stone and restoring its function. The lake you see today is a smaller version of its former self, home to ducks, fish, and a variety of birds. It is a popular spot for photographers, particularly during the winter months. The Munda Gumbad itself is a square structure, built on a raised platform. Each side features an arch, providing access to the inner chamber. Staircases on all four sides lead to the second story. These stairs are currently closed off with barbed wire due to a past accident. Inside, the chamber boasts a dome-shaped ceiling. While the Munda Gumbad may appear modest up close, it holds an undeniable charm, especially when viewed from afar. Perched on its grassy hilltop, it evokes a sense of history and mystery, inviting visitors to explore its timeless beauty. Children often play around the mound, their laughter echoing through the park, adding another layer of life to this historic site. The Munda Gumbad, a silent storyteller, awaits you amidst the bustling energy of Delhi.
