What began as a small colony is now Friedrichsdorf. Let’s explore this unique place. Friedrichsdorf is a part of Witterda. It resides within the district of Sömmerda. This is all in Thuringia.

Friedrichsdorf’s story starts in 1780. The Mainz Archbishop, Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal, ordered its creation. Landbauinspektor Neithardt von Gneisenau oversaw the establishment of this small colony.

Interestingly, Friedrichsdorf stands on land with a past. A village named Rasdorf or Rosdorf once existed here. Records mention it but it disappeared around 1450. Historian Wolfgang Kahl found evidence of this village dating back to 822-842. This area was once part of the neighboring Erfurt’s Küchendorf Witterda.

In 1802, Friedrichsdorf became Prussian. From 1807 to 1813, it was part of the French Principality of Erfurt. The Congress of Vienna changed things again. Friedrichsdorf returned to Prussia. In 1816, it joined the Erfurt district in the Prussian province of Saxony. Finally, in 1950, Friedrichsdorf became part of Witterda.

Friedrichsdorf sits on the northern slope of the Fahnersche Heights. It lies south of Witterda. The district road 20 passes by it. Schaderode and the A71 motorway are nearby. Friedrichsdorf is on the edge of the Thuringian Basin. Imagine the views from here.
