“Marubai,” locals whisper. What does it mean? It means “A mother who gives protection from death”. That’s what they named the goddess when smallpox ravaged this village. Welcome to Shri Marubai Gaondevi Mandir in Matunga. This temple is more than just a place of worship. It is a testament to faith and resilience.
For over 300 years, Shri Marubai Gaondevi Mandir has stood as a beacon of hope. This is especially true for the Gavdevi villagers. Marubai is their family deity. They see her as a manifestation of Ashtabhuja Aadi Maya. This makes her an incarnation of Goddess Durga.
Legend says the idol is Swayambhu. This means it appeared naturally. Villagers discovered the two-foot black idol facing east. They covered it in vermilion and sandalwood. The idol is impressive. Look closely and you will see symbols of power. Marubai holds Lord Shiva’s Trident. She also has Lord Vishnu’s discus. Then there is Lord Varuna’s conch shell. She even holds Lord Kubera’s club and Lord Indra’s thunderbolt.
Originally, this area was known as Marubai Tekdi Gaon. That was during British rule. Over time, it shortened to Matunga. The goddess chose to appear under a Peepal tree in Maheshwari Udyan. This tree still stands. It is nearly 400 years old. The current marble temple was built in 2000. Devotees and religious organizations funded it.
Imagine the opposition they faced when the British planned to move the original temple. It stood in the way of building a road. Residents feared the goddess’s wrath. The road is now known as Dr B. R. Ambedkar Road. Yet, the community persevered and the temple lives on.
The families who first managed the temple still do so today. The Marubai Trust formed in 1952. They ensure the temple’s legacy continues.
Come during Navratri or Diwali to see the temple shine. During Navratri, the temple hosts many celebrations. These include Kalash Sthapana. There is also Haldi Kumkum. Do not forget Abhishek, Pooja, Saraswati Aawahan, Kumari Poojan, and Ashtami Homams. The Palkhi procession is truly grand. The goddess is adorned with beautiful jewelry and attire.
