What makes a school more than just bricks and mortar? At the Heinz-Brandt-Schule in Berlin, it’s the echoes of history, the spirit of resistance, and a commitment to innovative education. The Heinz-Brandt-Schule isn’t just a school. It’s a living testament to the power of transformation. Established in 1877 as the Gemeindeschule Weissensee, the school has seen its share of history. The striking building we see today on Langhansstrasse, complete with its iconic logo, dates back to 1900. A modern extension, added in 2012, complements the original structure, blending the old with the new. This blend extends to the school’s namesake. Heinz Brandt, the school’s namesake since 1999, was a communist resistance fighter against the Nazis. He survived the Holocaust and later became a SED official in East Germany. He even spent time as a political prisoner in the GDR. After his release, he continued his political activism in West Germany, becoming a founding member of the Green Party. The Heinz-Brandt-Schule mirrors this spirit of resilience and transformation. It evolved from a polytechnical high school in East Germany (POS “Grete Walter”) to the 1st Hauptschule Weissensee after reunification, finally becoming the Heinz-Brandt-Schule in 2010. This shift from Hauptschule to a four-stream integrated secondary school reflects a commitment to inclusive, modern education. The Heinz-Brandt-Schule is renowned for its innovative teaching methods. Small learning groups and the “Lernbüro” system personalize learning. Students in German, Math, and English benefit from this self-directed approach in specially designed classrooms. This approach empowers students to take ownership of their education. The school’s “Herausforderung” program, inspired by a similar project at the Reformschule Winterhude in Hamburg, encourages students to push their boundaries. Since 2013, students have crossed the Alps on foot, cycled to Paris, and kayaked around the Baltic Sea. These challenges foster self-discovery and resilience. The Heinz-Brandt-Schule is also a beacon of cultural education. As a reference school in the Kulturagentenprogramm, it promotes cultural learning through collaborations with institutions like the Deutsches Theater and KW Institute for Contemporary Art. The annual “Kunstkommt” exhibition showcases student artwork. The school even participated in the award-winning film project “Rhythm Is It!” in 2004. The Heinz-Brandt-Schule has earned numerous accolades, including the German School Prize in 2011, the “Schule ohne Rassismus – Schule mit Courage” title in 2016, and recognition for its sustainable development efforts in 2022. This is a school that is more than just a place of learning. It’s a place where history comes alive, where innovation thrives, and where students are empowered to become engaged citizens of the world. The Heinz-Brandt-Schule stands as a testament to the enduring power of education to transform lives and communities.
