Never never never give up That’s the motto of Churchill High School. This isn’t just a school it’s a legacy. Churchill High School opened its doors in 1966. It was built thanks to a 1960 school bond. This bond also funded Roosevelt High School and the Blossom Athletic Center. The school’s namesake Sir Winston Churchill’s famous words inspire students daily. Churchill High School isn’t just about academics. It boasts a rich athletic history. The football team won the 4A state championship in 1976. A fierce rivalry with Clark High School started in 1984. This annual game the “Gucci Bowl” kicked off the San Antonio high school football season. Churchill’s boys basketball team also achieved greatness winning the 1982 5A state championship. The boys soccer team is another success story. They’ve claimed the Texas State Championship four times. This school has produced impressive alumni. Notable alumni include Olympic gold medalist swimmer Josh Davis. Actor Derek Lee Nixon also walked these halls. And so did Gary C Kelly the chairman of the board of Southwest Airlines. Churchill High School has been recognized for its excellence. It’s earned the National Blue Ribbon School award twice. In 2012 Children at Risk ranked Churchill 8th among the top high schools in Greater San Antonio.
