Ever wondered about the hidden history soaring above Caboolture? Right here at Caboolture Airfield a vibrant past awaits.

Caboolture Airfield isn’t just a place for planes. It’s a living testament to aviation history in Queensland. Established before 1965 the airfield originally served a crucial role. Norman Douglas Thurecht a pivotal figure built the first airstrip. He faced setbacks when his initial plans for an airport at Redcliffe were rejected. This was due to the lack of radar coverage near busy Brisbane airports.

The airfield’s current location is a leasehold from the Queensland Government. The Caboolture Aero Club manages the airfield. They’ve been its stewards since the beginning. The Brisbane Valley Gliding Club joined the airfield around 1990. They later changed their name to Caboolture Gliding Club in 1991.

Caboolture Airfield thrives today. It’s a hub for general aviation and recreational flying. Several flying clubs operate there. These include the Caboolture Gliding Club and Caboolture Microlights a flight training organization. The airfield also facilitates flight training for fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. Several providers offer these services including Airwork Helicopters and Aero Dynamic Flight Academy.

Beyond regular flights Caboolture Airfield holds a special place in vintage aircraft restoration. Several groups dedicate themselves to preserving aviation history. The Australian Aviation Heritage Centre and Complete Aircraft Care are among them. This passion has attracted fly-ins and airshows. Notable events include the Queensland Vintage Aeroplane Group’s Festival of Flight in 2001 and 2011.

The airfield isn’t without its challenges. Bird and wildlife hazards pose significant risks. This is partly because the airfield is unfenced and close to a landfill. Heavy rain can also lead to waterlogged taxiways. Sadly the airfield has also experienced tragic accidents. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigated these incidents. Their reports highlight the importance of safety and pilot training.

Yet through it all Caboolture Airfield endures. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of aviation. It showcases the passion for preserving history. The airfield is a true Queensland treasure a vibrant hub for aviation enthusiasts. It’s a place where the past and present meet in the breathtaking expanse of the Queensland sky.
