Established in 1899 Gyeongdong High School boasts a rich history. It wasn’t initially called Gyeongdong High School. Its original name was Gwallib Middle School. This all-boys school underwent several name changes. It became National Hansung High School in 1906. It later absorbed Hansung Foreign Language School. It was renamed Kyungsung High School. The school’s history reflects Korea’s modernization efforts. These efforts were interrupted by the Japanese annexation in 1910. Despite this Gyeongdong High School persevered. It transitioned to a high school in 1906. It continued to offer middle school classes until 1971.
Gyeongdong High School’s legacy extends far beyond its walls. It’s known for its impressive alumni network. This network spans Korea and the world. The school has educated many influential figures. These include four prime ministers high-ranking government officials and renowned scientists. Successful business executives and national athletes are also among its distinguished graduates. Its reputation is so strong that it’s part of the informal “K-S mark”. This mark is a reference to the academic credentials that supposedly guarantee career success. The “K” stands for Kyunggi High School. The “S” stands for Seoul National University. Before 1974 and the abolition of high school entrance exams Gyeongdong High School was the top-ranked school in the country.
The school has witnessed numerous milestones. In 2000 South Korea issued a commemorative stamp. This marked the school’s 100th anniversary. The school’s relocation in 1976 to Samsung-dong Gangnam-gu marked a significant chapter. Later it was designated a specialized science high school.
