“Wow, it’s huge!” Henry Crown Field House certainly makes an impression, doesn’t it? This grand old building has been a fixture on the University of Chicago campus since 1931. It was originally built as a state-of-the-art practice facility for the Chicago Maroons. Imagine a dirt infield for football and baseball, a raised wooden basketball court, and a 220-yard track, all under one roof! The field house was a generous gift from Henry Crown, a prominent Chicago businessman and philanthropist. In its early days, Henry Crown Field House could hold up to 3,500 spectators. Can you imagine the roar of the crowd during those basketball games? Over the years, the field house has undergone some major transformations. In the late 1970s, a second floor was added. Today, Henry Crown Field House serves as a hub for campus recreation and athletics. You’ll find students shooting hoops, running laps on the indoor track, and lifting weights in the fitness center. And while the Chicago Maroons basketball team may have moved on, the echoes of their victories still seem to linger in this grand old space.
