“What if school felt different?” That question sparked a revolution and led to the creation of The Paideia School. It stands as a testament to a group of parents’ vision in 1971. They wanted a less segregated, more inclusive learning environment.

The Paideia School began with a small group of 145 students. It was located in a building on Ponce de Leon Avenue. Imagine a school founded without a guaranteed location or experienced administrators. Yet, their determination prevailed. The founders opened The Paideia School in the fall of 1971.

Today, The Paideia School enrolls children ages 3 through 18. It has grown into a PK-12 institution. The school’s philosophy embraces children’s natural curiosity. They tailor their programs to each child’s talents and needs. The Paideia School’s main campus spans 6 acres with 16 buildings. There is even an urban forest along Ponce de Leon Avenue. Python Park is a 12-acre sports complex in Avondale Estates. It features soccer and baseball fields. Paideia Farm in East Atlanta includes vegetable beds and beehives.

Academically, The Paideia School offers honors courses in every high school subject. Grades and written evaluations start in junior high. Parent-teacher conferences happen twice a year for younger students. Impressively, 17% of the class of 2024 were National Merit honorees. The school integrates STEAM, service learning, and mindfulness practices.

The Paideia School is known for its athletics. About 65% of students in grades 7-12 participate in at least one sport. Their teams have won state championships in ultimate frisbee, soccer, cross country, and track.

The Paideia School’s commitment to arts is evident. Younger students receive general music instruction twice a week. Older elementary students participate in band, orchestra, or chorus. About 34% of high school students engage in music programs. Annual musical theater and drama productions captivate audiences. Visual arts are integral with art instruction offered at all levels. About 27% of high school students take art classes.

Parents are actively involved at The Paideia School. They help with lunch programs and serve as class or team parents. The Paideia School parents chair beloved traditions such as the fall barbecue. They also support the annual benefit for financial aid.

Many alumni have achieved notable success. Jon Ossoff is a U.S. senator from Georgia. Daniel Platzman is the drummer for Imagine Dragons. Tommy Dorfman is an actress known for “13 Reasons Why”.

The Paideia School stands as a beacon of progressive education. From its humble beginnings, it has become a leading institution. It fosters intellectual curiosity, artistic expression, and community engagement. The Paideia School continues to inspire and shape future generations.
