Dawn’s first light kisses the spires. This is Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn. It is one of Bangkok’s most iconic landmarks. The temple stands majestically on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River.

Wat Arun has a rich history. King Taksin envisioned it in 1768. He arrived here at dawn after fighting his way out of Ayutthaya. Ayutthaya had fallen to a Burmese army. He vowed to restore the temple. He renamed it Wat Chaeng. Wat Chaeng means Temple of the Dawn. The Emerald Buddha was once housed here. Later, it was moved to Wat Phra Kaew at the Grand Palace.

The central prang is Wat Arun’s most striking feature. It is over 70 meters high. The prang shimmers in the sunshine. This is because Rama III added porcelain decorations to the spires. Tiny pieces of colored glass adorn the prang. Intricate patterns of Chinese porcelain add to its beauty.

You can climb the central prang. The steps are steep. A railing helps you keep your balance. From the top, the views are stunning. You can see the winding Chao Phraya River. The Grand Palace and Wat Pho are visible opposite the river. Sculptures of Chinese soldiers and animals decorate the base of the tower.

Inside the ordination hall, a golden Buddha image awaits. Detailed murals decorate the walls. Wat Arun is a place of worship for Buddhists. Please dress respectfully. Cover-ups are available for rent near the entrance.

Wat Arun underwent major restorations. The most recent was from 2013 to 2017. Broken tiles were replaced. Lime plaster was used to refinish surfaces. This reflected the temple’s original appearance.

Wat Arun is easily accessible. Take a riverboat from Saphan Taksin boat pier to Pier 8. A shuttle boat will take you across the river. The temple is open daily from 8 am to 5.30 pm. Many consider Wat Arun one of Thailand’s most beautiful temples. Its beauty and craftsmanship are stunning. The temple embodies Bangkok’s rich history and culture.

Imagine Wat Arun at sunset. The temple is particularly stunning when lit up at night. Visit early in the morning for a quieter experience. The temple is less crowded then. Wat Arun is more than just a temple. It is a symbol of Bangkok. It represents history, art, and spirituality.
