Controversy once shook Saint Pauls First Lutheran Church. In 2020, a Black actress, Alex Marshall-Brown, sought rest under a tree on the church lawn. She was met with suspicion and hostility. Church volunteers questioned her presence and put up a “No Trespassing” sign. The incident, recorded by Marshall-Brown, quickly went viral. It sparked protests and accusations of racism against Saint Pauls First Lutheran Church. The church, a part of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, issued apologies. Two of the volunteers resigned. The acting principal, Santiago Botero, acknowledged the incident as “violent and racist.” He pledged anti-racist training for the church and school staff. Saint Pauls First Lutheran Church, serving North Hollywood for over 80 years, found itself grappling with a very public and painful lesson. The incident highlighted existing racial biases. It exposed the church’s struggle with the growing homeless population in Los Angeles. Marshall-Brown, however, extended a hand of reconciliation.
