“Have you ever wondered about the story behind those striking elephant sculptures as you drive into Durban?” Let me tell you about the Durban Elephants Art. These aren’t just any sculptures. They represent a saga of art, politics and community spirit.

The Durban Elephants Art project features huge elephant sculptures. They stand on a freeway island. The artist, Andries Botha, created them with wire frames filled with stones. He used galvanized steel armature and stainless steel mesh. Local quarry rocks fill the structures.

Originally commissioned before the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the project faced unexpected hurdles. In 2010, just two weeks before completion, the ANC halted the project. They felt the elephants resembled the Inkatha Freedom Party’s logo too closely.

This caused significant delays. Vandals damaged the artwork. They splashed red paint and removed metal wiring. Rocks tumbled out. Initially, there were three elephants. Vandals destroyed one and partially damaged the others.

But Andries Botha persevered. Determined, he added a fourth elephant. This would differentiate the artwork from the IFP logo. He started rebuilding in 2014.

Botha explained the fourth elephant would stand freely. It would rise from the ground. The other three elephants would surround it. They would emerge from the ground in different poses. He said the sculpture symbolizes the rebirth of elephants. Historically, elephants roamed this area before hunters killed them.

The Durban Elephants Art faced numerous challenges. There was political interference and vandalism. Despite these issues, the community rallied behind Botha’s vision. Their support proved crucial.

Botha expressed his gratitude. He thanked those who defended freedom of speech and the public’s right to access creativity. He also valued the moral authority of a work of art. He recognized it as intellectual property protected by the constitution.

The eThekwini Municipality eventually resolved the dispute. Construction resumed with added security measures. A surveillance camera was installed during the four-month construction.

These sculptures now stand as a symbol of resilience. They show artistic freedom and community collaboration. The Durban Elephants Art has become an integral part of the city’s identity. It embodies the spirit of Durban.

The Durban Elephants Art faced political controversy and vandalism. Yet, it emerged stronger. It represents the rebirth of art. It also demonstrates the enduring power of community support. Next time you see them, remember the long journey of the Durban Elephants Art.
