Can you hear the echoes of children’s laughter? Can you smell the faint aroma of incense and old hymnals? Here, at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Garden City, time seems to hold its breath. St. Raphael Catholic Church has witnessed the changing tides of Detroit. It has been a beacon of faith and community for 75 years. The present church, completed in 1954 for $118,000, replaced an older structure. This modern edifice, with its striking facade renovated in 1996, reflects the evolution of the parish. In 2014, St. Raphael merged with nearby St. Dunstan, further solidifying its role as a spiritual anchor. Within these walls, generations have celebrated life’s milestones, from First Communions in the 1930s, documented in cherished photographs, to countless baptisms, weddings, and confirmations. St. Raphael School, an integral part of the parish, has educated thousands of children, nurturing their faith and intellect. The school’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. A proposed merger with three other schools in 2014, intended to create the regional Divine Mercy School, was cancelled due to low enrollment. Despite this setback, St. Raphael School continues to thrive, thanks to dedicated teachers, supportive parents, and the unwavering presence of Father Ray Lewandowski and Sister Rita Mary Pyzic. The school maintains a unique tradition, the Senior Friends Program, connecting each class with a senior parishioner, creating intergenerational bonds. St. Raphael Catholic Church isn’t just a building; it’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith and community in the heart of Garden City.
